P is for Passion

I have just returned from the NW Regional Critical Access Hospital Conference and the NW Regional Rural Health Conference with renewed spirit and resolve. My congratulations to the Planning Committee Members and Staff for two excellent conferences. The program content was outstanding, and the networking opportunities excellent.

As we begin a new year at WRHA, I would like to thank David Olson and the 2007 Board Members and Staff for a job well done. I was asked what my focus would be for the coming year. Stopping to think for a moment, I responded with the three words I live by each day as I work within my own communities. Those are: Communication, Coordination, and Collaboration. I was pleased to hear various speakers throughout the conference reference the importance of these activities.

Those of us who live and work in rural settings (or support those who do) recognize the importance of providers and consumers working together to make the most of our limited resources. The responsibility belongs to each of us to take appropriate leadership to make this happen. The “Health” in “Healthy Communities” is more than hospitals and medical clinics. We must involve the whole infrastructure of a community as we communicate, collaborate, and coordinate to keep our rural healthcare system viable and strong.

Each day we are presented with new challenges. In as much as we are different, we are alike. When healthcare leaders accept these challenges with passion, they can, and do, become opportunities. I look forward to bringing my “passion” to the leadership of WRHA as I serve as your President this coming year.
