WRHA Launches New Website: www.wrha.com

Jennifer Ferrero, Business Development Consultant, Spokane Web Communications

Washington Rural Health Association (WRHA) wanted to maximize its use of  communication with members, health care providers, community partners, and vendors through a new Web site. In late 2008, Spokane Web Communications was hired to redesign and develop a new Web site as a communication tool for the organization. The new Web site, located at www.wrha.com, was launched in spring 2009.

WRHA is 20 years old and a key goal is to broaden the membership base while enhancing communications. It is a hub of information and activity with a regular quarterly e-newsletter and new content being published. Any organization interested in better developing their membership base and web-based  communications might use WRHA as a point of comparison.

About WRHA

The organization works to collaborate and strengthen rural health communities in Washington State. Through            partnerships and conferences, WRHA is an advocate for health and health care delivery in rural areas.

Through the redesign process, many key factors were considered in developing the new Web site. The site is more than just a pretty design, and serves to be easy to update and to offer clear web-based communication. However, the design aesthetic, through careful planning of layout, was developed to emphasize rural life and entice users to consider rural communities.

During the development process many key areas were   determined as critical points of communication:            networking, best practices in rural health, policy, calendar and events, recruiting, innovations and services in healthcare, sponsorships, marketing, and trends related to the rural impact of health care. In addition, factors affecting small hospital and clinic facilities in rural areas such as, “What happens to a community if a clinic closes?” or “What is the need in my community for enhanced health care?” were asked in order to consider how to communicate this vital information.

Through the use of content managed pages, WRHA can easily update the site and pages can remain dynamic with the publication of critical and timely information. The site can strengthen the voice of rural health care in Washington State and will hopefully serve as a model for rural health communication needs.
